Iligan City - Mothers of Marawi City gathered in a two-day workshop in Iligan City last March 4 and 5, 2019.

Participants shared ideas on leveling-off, and review of the organizational purpose and other agreements of UMMI.

The activity is the first in the series of writeshops which the United Mothers of Marawi Initiatives (UMMI) Core Group will undertake to produce a module for preventing and transforming violent extremism. They intend to establish a family-based framework that is anchored on the specific narratives, aspiration, and the cultural-religious ideals of the Méranaw society, as core principles of the module.

At the outset, participants articulated the reasons as to why such module is needed in this women-led undertaking. Second, they listened to expert inputs on the psycho-social development of youths, in order to create a more youth-responsive strategy in preventing and transforming violent extremism. According to them, what they are doing is part of the whole task of rebuilding Marawi City, including the lives of families affected by the siege in 2017.

The workshop was organized by the Enpold Bangsamoro Politics for Peace Phase 2, a project implemented by the Institute for Autonomy and Governance, in partnership with the Bangsamoro Women Services Center (BWSC), Institute for Bangsamoro Studies (IBS), Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID), Organization of Teduray and Lambangian Conference and Zamboanga Basilan Integrated Alliance, Inc. (ZABIDA), and supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade - Australia.
